After the House and Senate committees of Rhode Island approved legislation legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, the governor signed the bill into law. Fortunately, the bill will ultimately benefit tens of thousands of people with past marijuana convictions.

Rhode Island is following in the footsteps of the many states seeking to reap the benefits of legalizing recreational marijuana with the introduction of a legalization bill that also includes a "Social Equity" measure which will provide the means to expunge the records of those with prior convictions.

After months of debate between legislators, Rhode Island governor Dan Mckee announced a budget plan to legalize adult-use cannabis and provide an automatic expunction process for cannabis-related charges in the state.
